Historical Background

Born in 1754, Saint Seraphim joined the Sarov Monastery, located in the city of Sarov in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia. This monastery played a significant role in his spiritual development, as he spent many years there deepening his faith. Later, he retreated to the nearby forest, living as a hermit and dedicating his life to prayer, fasting, and meditation. During his time in solitude, he experienced profound spiritual insights, including visions of the Virgin Mary, and became renowned for his teaching that acquiring the Holy Spirit is the ultimate path to true peace.

Canonized in 1903, Saint Seraphim remains a symbol of spiritual joy and humility in the Russian Orthodox Church. The feast day of Saint Seraphim is celebrated on January 2, drawing worshippers and pilgrims from around the world. Pilgrims continue to visit Diveyevo Convent, located in Diveyevo, also in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, where his relics are enshrined.
